White Shield Veterans Center

Project Name: White Shield Veterans Center

Location: White Shield, ND

Completion Date: 2024

The White Shield Old Scouts Veterans Center is a 12-sided earth lodge covering 10,533 square feet, designed as a gathering space for the White Shield Tribal community to remember and celebrate their veterans. An inviting entryway leads to a spacious ceremonial area with a skylight and custom terrazzo flooring. At its center, an eight-sided gathering space seats up to 186 people, featuring climate-controlled display cases for cultural and military artifacts. The facility includes offices for tribal organizations, a secure armory for ceremonial weapons, and a versatile room for telehealth services. This space emphasizes wood throughout, both structurally and aesthetically with wood acoustic panels. This memorial center honors tribal members who served in the US Armed Forces, creating a serene environment for community gatherings and ceremonies.

ASI Architectural contributed to the project by providing 2,464 square feet of PS Hickory wall Grille with backer, and 602 square feet of PS Hickory backer and doweled ceiling Grille, crafted to fit the unique design requirements of the project. ASI produced two custom panel sizes for both the ceiling and wall systems, ensuring seamless integration with the facility’s wood-rich aesthetic, which emphasizes the importance of natural materials throughout. Acoustical backers were provided for both systems to enhance the facility’s sound quality and performance, creating an optimal environment for the ceremonial and community events held in this serene and meaningful space. The design of the memorial, which includes an inviting entryway, a ceremonial area with a skylight, and a versatile room for services like telehealth, integrates the rich cultural history of the tribe with a deep respect for its veterans.
