Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis spans 250 acres and the new, all-electric, net-zero-energy Welcome Center enhances visitor experiences and promotes community engagement. This two-story, 25,000-square-foot center can host flexible spaces for events and classes, focusing on various aspects of remembrance while utilizing sustainable technologies like a geothermal heating system and rooftop solar panels. Surrounding gardens feature walking paths and landscapes designed for reflection, creating a seamless transition from the city to the cemetery. Ultimately, the Welcome Center aims to redefine the cemetery experience and serve as a model for future community-oriented spaces.
This project features 3,556 square feet of Grille Backer ceiling panels with ¾” x 3-1/4” rails spaced 3” on-center, with 4 rails per foot. Since the building was under new construction and the drywall had not yet been installed at the time the order was placed, significant coordination was required to ensure that all other trades adhered to the specified dimensions in the shop drawings.
We produced seven different custom panel sizes for the space. Due to some field modifications made by the customer to certain panels, we provided hot-melt edge banding to facilitate the finish of their field cuts. A standout feature of the project is the skylight, which is visible through the grille system in the foyer area, adding a unique design element to the space.
