In January 2022, New York City took another step towards updating its public transit system with Moynihan Station and the connected Moynihan Food Hall. Passengers welcomed the much-anticipated, state-of-the-art food hall and expanded seating area and anticipate a mix of restaurants, refreshment stands, and coffee houses. To add interest to the space’s ceiling, the architect devised a series of interlocking beams with various depths and lengths, creating an intricate overhead maze manufactured by ASI Architectural.
At first, the project’s complexity posed a challenge to ASI Architectural. However, through extensive preplanning and coordination, ASI’s team of project managers, designers, and operators developed a detailed plan for execution. The beams, crafted from Class A Fire Rated MDF boards and finished with clear lacquer on rift-cut Cherry veneer, added warmth and elegance while concealing seams with a uniform grain structure. Lighting was seamlessly integrated into the beam layout, adding another layer of complexity to the design.
To ensure precise installation, ASI Architectural grouped the beams into “clouds” or sections, each labeled with a unique code. These beams were shipped ready for installation, eliminating the need for field cutting. ASI also collaborated with the installer to incorporate threaded rod attachments and custom alignment saddles to meet local code requirements. The meticulous planning and teamwork between ASI and the installer resulted in a smooth installation process, with no troubleshooting needed. The completed project has transformed the space into a stunning and functional hub that has excited the city’s residents.
