The Middle Country Public Library in Centereach, New York, has evolved since its relocation in 1972 to meet the growing needs of its community. Highlighted in American Library’s latest issue, this renovation demonstrates that libraries now serve as comprehensive community hubs equipped with computer labs, classrooms, and collaborative spaces. The recently renovated space features advanced makerspace equipment, an audio-video recording room, and acoustically separated meeting rooms, reflecting the modern library’s role as a dynamic learning center. Enhancements also include updates to the library’s grand hall, creating an exceptional environment that enriches the community’s experience.

ASI Architectural’s contribution involved a close collaboration with Hi-Lume Carpentry to ensure the final result aligned with the architect’s original design intent. The challenge was to create Grille wall panels that could be prefabricated in the shop and installed with consistent, predictable spacing while still capturing the architect’s vision of randomness. We developed a solution for the side walls using four distinct panels that, when assembled, gave the appearance of random panels. This approach allowed us to fabricate the panels in the shop and install them in the field while still achieving the desired random aesthetic.
