University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education

Project Name: University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Completion Date: 2023

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (GSE) renovation added 16,200 square feet of new space and updated 16,900 square feet across two connected 1960s buildings. This initiative was driven by the need to consolidate GSE’s programs and accommodate its growing student body. The design emphasizes transparency and community engagement, featuring expansive glass elements to create an inviting atmosphere. UPenn President Liz Magill highlighted the importance of this approach in fostering empathy and imagination among educators. The new spaces promote collaboration, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning, including innovative facilities like an innovation studio and a multimedia virtual reality lab. GSE Dean Katharine Strunk noted that the project was a culmination of a long-term vision to unify the community under one roof, enhancing the educational experience.

This project included 3790 square feet of our Microperf Panels with Beech wood veneer. These ceiling and wall panels incorporate cutting-edge acoustical technology to provide sound mitigation without the appearance or feel of traditional absorber panels. Engineered to resemble standard millwork, these panels offer exceptional sound absorption properties. Their lightweight design allows for versatile mounting options, and they are built with a durable fiberglass core. The ceiling installation seamlessly wraps from the first floor, extending up a vertical wall, with the reveals perfectly aligning with the floors above and below. The ceiling above also aligns through a curtain wall, creating a cohesive design. This installation strikes a beautiful balance between acoustics and aesthetics.
