Minnehaha Academy

Project Name: Minnehaha Academy

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Completion Date: 2019

In 2017, Minnehaha Academy faced a devastating explosion that claimed two lives and destroyed two buildings. By 2019, they rebuilt a welcoming space featuring hemlock-finished grille ceiling panels by ASI Architectural, symbolizing warmth and connection. Two live trees, thriving under a skylight in the lobby, honor the lost staff and the school’s natural setting, embodying resilience and renewal.

The architects faced a tight timeline—just 18 months to complete the project before students returned for the 2019 school year. Their design emphasized warmth, flowing spaces, and connections to the school’s natural surroundings, creating a welcoming environment for learning and community.

A key element of the design is the installation of 19,000 square feet of Grille ceiling panels. Set at a diagonal to align with an existing building on campus, the panels visually tie the structures together. Made from hemlock, the ceilings add warmth to the bustling space, while an acoustical backer absorbs sound, mitigating noise from hard surfaces. The diagonal orientation, initially chosen to address potential alignment concerns, ultimately highlighted the precision and craftsmanship of the ceiling panels.

Above the ceiling, concealed infrastructure—miles of ductwork, electrical systems, and communications equipment—ensures the building operates seamlessly, supporting modern educational needs.

Today, the rebuilt campus has become a hub for connection and growth. Teachers, students, and staff benefit from the thoughtful design, which fosters collaboration and a sense of belonging. The space blends the past with the present, honoring a legacy while looking forward to the future.
