Berkshire PK-12 School

Project Name: Berkshire PK-12 School

Location: Burton, Ohio

Completion Date: 2022

Project Overview

The Berkshire PK–12 School, located on Kent State University’s Geauga Campus, brings together students of all grade levels – elementary through high school – along with career tech programs in one modern, student-centered facility. Designed into a 20-foot hillside, the building makes smart use of the terrain to provide separate entries for buses, parents, and events, while maximizing natural light in classrooms and gathering spaces. Three distinct academic wings connect through a vibrant central hub that houses the auditorium, two gymnasiums, a library/makerspace, student dining, and administrative offices. The project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, emphasizing its focus on sustainability and long-term value.

ASI’s Contribution

ASI contributed 6,568 square feet of our Linear Wood Tongue & Groove (T&G) ceiling and wall systems to the Berkshire PK-12 School project. A key feature of this installation was a 250-foot continuous run of solid red cedar. To accommodate natural expansion and contraction over such a long span, we engineered control joints to divide the run into thirds. Each joint was carefully designed not only for function but also aesthetics, incorporating custom wooden “caps” to conceal the joints seamlessly. For the canopy portion of the project, every plank required back-screwing in addition to the use of our direct attachment clips, ensuring both structural integrity and a clean, refined finish.
